Before diving into advanced Texas Holdem strategy, you must first master the fundamentals of the game. You’ve read, I’m sure, the famous phrase:
“It takes a moment for Texas Holdem to understand, but a lifetime to master,” and this could not be nearer to the facts.
So, if you want to try Texas Holdem poker for the first time, before even sitting down to play, these are the basic rules you need to know.
Hand Rankings for Texas Holdem
It would be close to difficult to play it without knowing what beats what in poker. Fortunately, Holdem has regular hand rankings, so you shouldn’t have any trouble remembering them.
From the best holding to the weakest, here is a poker hands list:
#1. Royal Flush: Ace, King, Queen, Jack and Ten of the same suit, A♣ K♣ Q♣ J♣ T♣
#2. Straight Flush: a five-card straight flush with the same suit that isn’t A-high, such as T♠ 9♠ 8♠ 7♠ 6♠
#3. Four of a Kind: a four-card combination of the same rank, such as 8♠ 8♥ 8♦ 8♣ 4♣
#4. Full House: three cards of the same rank and a pair, such as J♥ J♦ J♣ 5♥ 5♣
#5. Flush: five cards of the same suit not in a row, such as K♥ Q♥ 8♥ 5♥ 3♥
#6. Straight: five cards in a row, such as 5♥ 6♦ 7♣ 8♣ 9♦
#7. Three of a Kind: three cards of the same rank plus two non-matching cards, such as 9♥ 9♠ 9♣ 6♦ 3♠
#8. Two Pairs: a combination of two separate pairs, such as 4♣ 4♠ 7♣ 7♠ K♣
#9. One Pair: two cards of the same rank and three random cards, such as A♦ A♥ J♣ 7♦ 3♥
#10. High Card: When all of your cars have separate ranks and no combination, such as K♥ Q♠ 8♣ 3♠ 2♦
